Industrial Power Washer to Remove Paint

Paint Removal with High-Pressure Water

Spray processes with high-pressure water enable an efficient processing of the most varied metallic surfaces.

Whether it involves ships, painting cubicles or painted metal roofs: With power washers, paint can be efficiently removed from metallic surfaces. With its different cleaning systems, KAMAT offers a cleaning system for all applications. High-pressure pumps can be combined with matching accessories and coordinated to the paint-removal substrate. By the use of high-pressure guns, surface cleaners and additional abrasives, KAMAT offers extensive options for removing paint with high pressure water.

Reference example: Water-sand blasting process with paint-removal and rust-removal from ships

With the water-sand blasting process, an abrasive agent is added to the high-pressure water, in order to enable efficient paint and rust removal from metallic surfaces. Dust contamination concerns mean that pure sand blasting is prohibited in many countries, or permissible only under strict conditions. Water-sand blasting is an alternative which enables the use of abrasive agents, such as sand, silica sand or ground blast furnace slag, in order to achieve different shot blasting results.

In comparison with purely abrasive agent shot blasting systems, this system has the advantage that no deformation (peening) arises in the shot blasted material. With the water-sand blasting process the heat is removed by the water so no form-changing heat concentration occurs in the shot blasted material. In addition, in case of paint removal with high pressure, the removed material is carried in the water and washed away.

In case of the water-sand blasting process, the high-pressure gun is provided with an injector, through which the abrasive additive is added to the water. With increasing operating pressure, the required quantity of abrasive agent reduces. Vice versa in comparison with pure water jets, a significantly lower pressure is required for a comparable result.

Reference example: Cleaning of painting cubicles in the automotive industry

In painting cubicles of e.g. the automotive industry, so-called overspray arises during the painting process. Overspray is made up of the paint which does not adhere to the workpiece and leaks out into the environment as a spray. The air contaminated with these paint droplets is routed via ventilation systems to cleaning units, such as water spray separators. These exhaust air systems frequently have a large surface area and are covered with grates set in the ground of the painting cubicles. A large percentage of this overspray collects on these grates, and in the ducts leading from them. These system have to be cleaned frequently and, in case of extensive use, even daily.

The painting cubicles are cleaned by the KAMAT customer HIDROTEK. The Turkish company has a framework agreement for the cleaning of the cubicles, shafts and gratings. KAMAT plunger pumps and complete high-pressure cleaning systems are used, with which the paint residues are removed reliably: The cleaning specialist employs high-pressure guns from KAMAT which are provided with fan nozzles with 15° and 2 mm diameter for the shafts and walls. These are operated with pressures between 600 and 700 bar. The advantage: The KAMAT high-pressure gun can be guided exactly so that shafts can also be cleaned accurately. Furthermore, our high-pressure guns offer an ergonomic structuring which enables safe and fatigue-free work. The paint-removal of the ground-grating is implemented with the KAMAT surface cleaner.

Reference example: Layer removal and paint-removal from painted metal roofs

Painted metal roofs are exposed to diverse influences from the weather: Extending from high temperature cycling and build-ups of heat, through the influence of ultraviolet radiation and dirt, to mechanical influences such as hailstorms. All these influences lead to the weathering of the paint coating over time leading to it becoming fragile and porous. As soon as the sheet metal substrates are unprotected, they start corroding and a new coating is absolutely necessary. So that the new coating adheres securely, the old paint must be removed completely.

Before the application of a new coating (manually or with spray equipment), the market leaders of the coating and paint materials demand a complete removal, not only of the visible paint finish, but also of the priming layers and corrosion. Only then do the paint manufacturers guarantee the stability of their products for up to 20 years.

In Austria we cooperate, among others, with a specialist firm for the paint removal from painted metal roofs. For years it has implemented coating removal with no residue. Formerly this was implemented with hard work using angle grinders, and was associated with enormous noise and dust contamination. Today the paint removal is implemented rapidly and securely with KAMAT pumps together with the surface cleaner 2,500 air, which removes all paint coatings and emerging corrosion to leave a residue free surface using an operating pressure of 2,000 to 2,500 bar. For the manual post-cleaning at the folds, the customer uses a high-pressure pump and the Roto-Lance with an operating pressure between 2,000 and 2,300 bar. Dependent on the quality of the old paint, the KAMAT high-pressure pump and the pump accessories enable an area of 100 to 250 m2 to be cleaned per day.
