KAMAT puts on the pressure with a Scania V8

A Scania V8 has started a career as an industrial engine at pump manufacturer KAMAT. As the drive unit for a high-performance pump, the Swedish legend can show its full strength in a tough industrial environment.

The latest high-pressure container unit from KAMAT, a pump manufacturer in Western Germany, has a few surprises in store. From the outside, the turnkey system is a standard 20-foot container that is placed on a vehicle chassis for mobile applications. But on the inside, the noise-insulated steel container hides away a lot of high-tech equipment: A powerful Scania engine – an industrial engine with eight cylinders arranged in a V formation – and an automated Traxon gearbox from ZF work together with a high-performance pump in perfect unison.

KAMAT high-pressure pump with a mission

The high-pressure container unit is indeed on a mission. On most systems of this type, speed and pneumatic pressure have to be set manually. In practical application, operators often run the system at an excessive speed, which in turn results in high wear on the engine and the pressure control valve and in unnecessary fuel consumption. “With our new pump solution, we replicate a clever, experienced operator in a fully automated system,” explains KAMAT Managing Director Jan Sprakel, who initiated the development of the concept. The system is now configured so that it detects the water tool used, such as a high-pressure gun or a tank washing head, and automatically sets the appropriate operating parameters. Large projects with continuous operation as well as the usual small tasks can be covered with a single system by simply changing the tool. “The operator only has to enter the desired pump pressure on the display and the intelligent system control ensures optimum operation of the overall system,” Sprakel sums up the advantages of the high-pressure pump.

The Scania V8 plays a key role in the pump solution

The experts at KAMAT worked on their reference project for a powerful mobile high-pressure pump for almost a year. Practical support was provided by ScanDiesel, a Scania partner from Bremen in Germany who has delivered more then 5,000 engines from the Swedish manufacturer to its customers in the industrial and marine sectors over the past 20 years. For the pump system, the specialist for diesel engines, engine accessories and components delivered a Scania V8 with 450 kW, including exhaust gas treatment in line with EU emissions standard V. Of course Jan Sprakel is familiar with the reputation that the eight-cylinder engine has as drive unit for the trucks from the Swedish manufacturer. He believes, however, that there is also a strong case for using it as an industrial engine.

Fuel efficiency ensures low operating costs

“The Scania V8 is an engine with great power and high torque that has proven itself thousands of times. The compact design play a key role, as well as the ability to easily communicate with the installed ZF gearbox,” Sprakel sums up the decision for the Swedish engine. With the new high-pressure pump, KAMAT focuses on industrial service providers in particular. In tank cleaning, for example, ten-hour workdays under pressure and full load are normal for high-pressure pumps. Sustainability of the drive is clearly a key factor in this environment. With its fuel efficiency, the Scania engine offers a great advantage. “Every litre of fuel saved by the Scania V8 is cash in hand for the owner,” explains Jan Sprakel.
