Reliable Lubrication for Hydrostatic Plain Bearings Under High Loads

Hydrostatic plain bearings are used wherever very high loads, precise guidance and maximum operational reliability are required – for example, in rolling mills, large machines or slow-running heavy-duty systems. To ensure that these bearings operate reliably, they require active, external pressure lubrication that builds up the lubricating film independently of speed or movement.

With our pump and hydraulic systems, KAMAT provides a stable oil supply at a defined pressure, which prevents dry running, reduces wear and significantly increases the service life of the bearings.

Functional Principle of Hydrostatic Lubrication

In hydrostatic bearings, the lubricating film is not generated by the rotation of the shaft, but by an external pump that feeds oil under pressure into the bearing pockets. This creates a load-bearing fluid film that separates the sliding surfaces from each other – even when stationary or at very low speeds.

Features of hydrostatic lubrication

  • Externally generated lubricating film through pump pressure
  • Constant oil flow to the bearing pockets
  • High load-bearing capacity even with load changes
  • Reliable lubrication even before start-up
  • Optimal protection against friction and wear

This allows bearings to operate precisely, with low vibration and reliably, even under extreme conditions.

Why Hydrostatic Bearings Require Force-Fed Lubrication

Hydrostatic bearings require a continuous pressure lubrication system, as no load-bearing film can be formed without external pump pressure.

The most important advantages:

  • Reliable lubrication from the first revolution
  • The oil film is already in place before start-up, preventing dry running.
  • Extremely low friction
  • The uniform fluid film ensures smooth running and high efficiency.
  • High load capacity
  • The external pressure supports the bearing even under dynamic peak loads.
  • Longer service life of the bearing surfaces
  • Low wear, fewer repairs and reduced maintenance intervals.
  • Stable process conditions
  • Particularly important in rolling mills, where precise guidance of the rolls is crucial.

Areas of application

KAMAT systems for hydrostatic lubrication are used in, among other things:

  • Rolling mills in the steel industry
  • Supply of working and support roll bearings (e.g. Morgoil®-like systems)
  • Heavy-duty machines and large shafts
  • Machines with high radial and axial forces
  • Precision and machine tools
  • Applications that require high accuracy, smooth running and low vibration
  • Special hydraulic applications
  • e.g. turntables, generator bearings, presses

Hydrostatic lubrication offers considerable advantages wherever bearings have to run with low friction and without wear despite high loads.
