Basics: High-Pressure Pumps & Plunger Pumps

A high-pressure pump is a pump that compresses fluids to particularly high pressures – at KAMAT up to 4,000 bar. It is used wherever water or other media must be delivered with high energy, for example in industrial cleaning, waterjet cutting, pressure testing, or process applications in the chemical, oil & gas, and energy industries.

A plunger pump is a reciprocating positive displacement pump in which a cylindrical plunger moves through a static seal into the pump head and thereby displaces the medium. Plunger pumps achieve higher pressures than most other pump types and are particularly suited to continuous high-pressure operation. KAMAT builds plunger pumps in triplex (3 plungers) and quintuplex (5 plungers) configurations.

KAMAT High-Pressure Pumps for Industrial Applications

KAMAT offers a consistently modular high-pressure pump system designed for industrial use cases that demand maximum pressure, efficiency, and operational reliability. Our product range covers power levels from 15 to 3,000 kW and operating pressures up to 4,000 bar – capable of handling media with viscosities up to 2,000 mPas and fluid temperatures up to 200 °C.

All models are engineered for seamless integration into new or existing systems – with both horizontal and vertical installation options. Thanks to the modular design, components such as the A-Head or M-Head pump heads can be flexibly configured based on pressure range, medium, and flow requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions About High-Pressure Pumps

A high-pressure pump moves fluids at very high pressure. It generates that pressure through volumetric displacement: during the intake stroke, the cylinder fills with the medium; during the pressure stroke, the fluid is forced through the outlet valve and into the discharge line. High-pressure pumps are used wherever elevated pressures are required for cleaning, testing, water hydraulics, or process technology.

KAMAT designs and manufactures high-pressure pumps for industrial applications at operating pressures up to 4,000 bar. In addition to the pump itself, the portfolio includes complete pump stations and custom high-pressure systems.

Looking for a high-pressure solution for your application? Our experts will support you through the sizing and selection process.

The most fundamental distinction among oscillating positive displacement pumps is between piston pumps and plunger pumps. In a piston pump, the seal travels with the piston; in a plunger pump, the seal remains stationary. For very high pressures, plunger pumps are the preferred design. Depending on the number of plungers, a further distinction is made between triplex pumps (3 plungers) and quintuplex pumps (5 plungers).

In many industrial applications, triplex plunger pumps have established themselves as the standard choice due to their balanced ratio of efficiency, maintenance requirements, and capital cost.

KAMAT focuses on robust high-pressure plunger pumps for continuous industrial duty and supports customers in selecting the right size and configuration for their needs.

The achievable pressure depends on the design, materials, and application requirements. KAMAT high-pressure pumps operate at pressures up to 4,000 bar. Even the smallest pump in the portfolio reaches pressures up to 2,000 bar with a drive power of 15 kW.

The pressure actually required depends on the application. Industrial cleaning often calls for a few hundred bar, while waterjet cutting and specialized process applications operate at significantly higher pressures.

Our application experts will help you identify the most cost-effective solution for your pressure and flow rate requirements.

The three primary selection criteria are operating pressure and flow rate, the fluid being pumped, and the installation conditions. These factors determine requirements for pump size, materials, sealing systems, and drive concept.

Beyond these fundamentals, operating hours, maintenance requirements, energy efficiency, and future expansion options all play a role in the decision.

KAMAT uses a modular component system that enables application-specific configuration while benefiting from standardized parts, high spare parts availability, and short service turnaround times.

With a few key technical parameters, we can recommend the right pump configuration for your application.

High-pressure pumps are used across a wide range of industries, including mining, steel production, chemicals, oil and gas, marine, food processing, and pharmaceuticals.

Typical applications include high-pressure cleaning, waterjet technology, pressure testing, water hydraulics, descaling, tank cleaning, and various processes in the chemical and process industries.

KAMAT supplies high-pressure pumps and complete high-pressure systems to demanding industrial customers worldwide, supporting them from initial sizing through to commissioning.
