Efficient Retrofitting in the Nuclear Sector with High-Pressure Technology from KAMAT.
Framatome, a leading international nuclear technology and services provider headquartered in France, has commissioned KAMAT to retrofit an existing diesel-driven high-pressure unit. The aim was to replace the current system with KAMAT’s proven high-pressure technology, which is already in use at Framatome. The focus was not on correcting technical defects — the system was fully functional — but on strategic standardisation to simplify maintenance, operation and spare parts management in the long term.

Challenge:
The retrofit required precise technical adaptation to existing KAMAT interfaces and system conditions. A key element was the reuse of components such as the base frame, electric motor, and soundproof enclosure. At the same time, the new KAMAT high-pressure pump, along with the control system, suction line and valve technology, had to be seamlessly integrated. This demanded precision, sustainability and an in-depth understanding of the system, while ensuring a unified, future-proof technology platform.
The solution: Retrofit the KAMAT High-Pressure Pump (type K18045M21-3G).
The existing high-pressure pump was replaced with a KAMAT K18045M21-3G pump (237 l/min at 250 bar) as part of the retrofit. Several technical modifications were carried out in parallel. The suction line was redesigned according to the latest technical standards and fitted with a booster pump and filtration system. A new 3,000-litre feed tank was also installed. A new control system tailored to the requirements of the KAMAT pump was also implemented. The container, soundproofing, base frame and electric motor were retained to reduce costs and conserve resources.
Unified technology – tangible benefits
Framatome now uses the same size of pump and interchangeable parts as in its other existing installations. This has clear advantages for managing spare parts: Using identical components reduces inventory, simplifies logistics and speeds up maintenance. Reusing existing components made the retrofit cost-effective, sustainable and easy to service, providing a technical solution that is perfectly adapted to the existing plant network.
